What is the 2024 NHL Draft?
A draft is a process used in some countries (primarily North America) and in sport to recruit eligible athletes. During a draft, teams each have the opportunity to choose one athlete at a time. Thus, the team with what is called the “1st Pick” can choose first, which generally allows them to take one of the best young athletes.
The format of the draft varies from league to league, but for leagues such as the NBA, NFL or in this case the NHL, the drawing order is determined by the teams' record during the regular season. Teams that have not been able to qualify for the final stages or “play-offs” are part of a draw in which the lowest ranked teams have a greater chance of being drawn first. The goal is to offer the “worst” teams an opportunity to build a more competitive squad in the future, and thus rebalance the league.
This is the “main” gateway to the big league for young athletes. Hence the name, “Entry Draft”. Athletes such as Connor McDavid for hockey, Michael Jordan for basketball, or Tom Brady for American football and many others have gone through the draft of their respective leagues.
